Workplace Safety for Your Florida Business

One of a Florida business owner’s responsibilities is providing safe spaces and working conditions for his or her employees. Everybody wins with workplace safety, because fewer injuries and illnesses translate into fewer lost workdays, better employee morale, and fewer workers compensation claims. Since June is National Safety Month, it’s a great time to review and improve the workplace safety of your business.

Develop a workplace safety plan

In order to minimize workplace accidents, begin by evaluating the hazards unique to your business. A construction business will have very different safety risks and precautions than a sales office, for example. In addition to following OSHA regulations and Florida-specific requirements, talk with your employees about their safety needs and concerns. They may see hazards in their day-to-day work that you as an owner are not aware of.

Once you understand the hazards, develop a safety plan. This may include instruction on tool and equipment use and safety, creating safety checklists, or guidelines and training for using personal protective equipment (PPE) like gloves, goggles, or hard hats. You may also include emergency plans such as what to do if a fire breaks out, or what to do in a medical emergency. Review safety and emergency plans periodically. Also review near-miss and accident reports to learn how to improve safety. Continue to encourage employees to discuss potential safety issues and safety tips. An atmosphere of open communication contributes to workplace safety since employees who feel able to share their concerns will be more likely to bring safety problems to your attention.
